Accommodation, food, clothing, and psychological assistance were provided to thousands of people in the hardest-hit areas, such as Alicante and Murcia. Additionally, donations from individuals and companies, including a generous contribution from footballer David de Gea, were received. The Red Cross also focused on reconstruction, offering material assistance to affected families and providing ongoing psychological support. Awareness programs were conducted in schools to prepare children for future emergencies. Two years later, progress in the recovery of the affected areas is reported, and the closure of the intensive assistance period to affected families is highlighted, although the Red Cross will continue to provide support sporadically.
It is also worth highlighting the role of the Emergency Sensitization and Information Teams (ESIE) of Red Cross Youth in attending to children and young people in emergency situations, with a particular focus on the reception of evacuated Afghan individuals at the Torrejón de Ardoz air base. The ESIE teams are composed of trained volunteers who provide emotional support and guidance to children affected by natural disasters or emergency situations. In the case of the reception of Afghan individuals, a play area has been set up for children where efforts are made to maintain a safe and conducive environment for them to distract themselves and express their emotions through play. ESIE teams also provide clear and accessible information about the situation to children and young people, as well as raise awareness in society about the importance of emergency preparedness. These teams are activated nationally or locally according to needs, and their work is essential to ensure the emotional well-being and resilience of children and young people in difficult times.

This exposure makes people susceptible to cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory, and other health issues, resulting in significant healthcare costs for governments. Major contributors to air pollution include ozone, carbon monoxide, particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), with transportation being a leading cause in Spain and the European Union.

In response, with support from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, Ecologists in Action conducted various campaigns to measure air pollution in cities across Castilla y León during 2020 and 2021, particularly focusing on NO2 levels due to its direct association with fossil fuel use. The latest campaign in February 2022 specifically targeted the vicinity of educational centers in eight cities of Castilla y León. In Salamanca, results showed 17 measurement tubes indicating 6 points above the annual limit value of 40 µg/m³ of NO2, with all surpassing the WHO’s recommended annual limit value of 10 µg/m³ of NO2. These findings prompted Ecologists in Action to launch an awareness campaign in educational institutions.

A total of approximately 65 hours of informational talks were conducted across 12 public secondary schools, with 9 informational panels displayed in 10 of these schools. The talks featured active methodologies introducing ecological crises, air pollution-causing gases and particles, health effects, measurement methods, official vs. Ecologists in Action’s monitoring devices, alternatives, and interactive activities (Jeopardy or Kahoot). Additionally, air quality brochures were distributed to students after each talk, reaching over 1,100 students and attendees.

#19 - THE GLOBAL CIVIL SOCIETY SEMINAR

The initiative, launched in 2016 by the Rafael del Pino Foundation in collaboration with the Harvard Kennedy School, aims to convene practitioners and academics from Spain to share a deep reflection on the latest global developments affecting civil societies. The GCSS has explored every year since, thanks to the insights of top Harvard faculty, focal topics such as the challenges faced by civil societies around the world; the governance of civil society organizations; the interface between the business sector and civil society; and social innovation in response to global challenges. Participants are selected for their track record of civil society leadership and their accomplishments in the business, public or non-profit sectors or in nurturing social movements.
From the very first step of this study, GCSS alumni approached civil society in aspirational terms, defining it as a valued achievement. They brainstormed civil society as an ethically and politically superior type of group gathering individual citizens who come together to develop strategies to achieve transformation toward the common good through organizing and engaging in social movements. Civil society is both a prerequisite for a pluralistic and healthy democracy and a desired counterbalance to state and market powers.

The initiative aims to promote CSOs working with different stakeholders in order to reinforce the work of civil society. In an interconnected world, CSOs can’t work alone and therefore, this forum is promoting partnerships.
